Welcome to the BACR After School Programs Blog!
For over three decades, Bay Area Community Resources After School Programs have had the privilege of serving the diverse communities of the Bay Area. They have done so by promoting the healthy development of individuals, families and communities through direct services, volunteerism, and partnering with the San Francisco Bay Area. The BACR family is a tight knit group, made up of passionate and creative individuals who have devoted themselves to the betterment of the lives of the children we serve. This blog was created to appreciate and showcase the achievements of our outstanding staff and their programs. Please join us on our journey of documenting the lives of the everyday heroes that serve in our programs.
The Marin After School Programs, Learning and Enrichment After School Program (LEAP), are the house of more than 650 students between 2:30 and 6:00 PM every day. In partnership with San Rafael City Elementary School, and generous community based organizations we are pleased to provide academic support and a fun variety of enrichment activities that provide better opportunities to the youth we serve.
We have been working hard on providing professional development to 8 Site Coordinators and more than 30 Program Leaders so they can better support their students’ social emotional growth. These efforts have resulted on a change of the programs’ culture which now focus more on building relationships and looking at the root of the behavior rather on the consequences that should be in place to enforce the “rules”. It has been very rewarding to see happier faces among children and adults as an outcome of this initiative from the California Department of Education After School Division and Partnership for Children & Youth.
This year partnerships highlights include: 4H Marin STEM Clubs at the elementary sites, Engineering Adventures curriculum implementation at the middle school site. SCORES interschool soccer tournaments and poetry athletes local presentations.
What our Sites Coordinators want to tell you about LEAP?
The Bahia Vista Elementary School LEAP program is a well-established program, that services students in 1st - 5th grade, with strong support from our community partners as well as from our school site and administration, we encourage our students to be responsible, make good decisions and solve their problems. Our students receive homework assistance, engage in physical activities and have fun creating arts and crafts along with their peers.

At Coleman Elementary LEAP our students love attending Leap and enjoy many special programs and benefits. Weekly enrichment activities include Technology & coding instruction, PE, art instruction, science and a creative writing group for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade. Our 60+ students also enjoy a unique partnership with our neighbor, Dominican University. Tutors from Dominican are homework helpers, mentors, and enthusiastic supporters of our students. It is truly a win- win situation for all!

At Davidson Middle School LEAP we put an extra focus on kinesthetic and cooperative learning. We spend dedicated time every day on community building and active game play. We are well known for our robotics program that we've featured for the past year and a half as well as our engineering projects. The positive behavior intervention strategies we've been implementing have had a lasting impact with our students engagement.

San Pedro Elementary LEAP, allows students to feel comforted, excited about learning, and to look forward to attending every day. We support students to develop personal social skills, and permit them to learn from different cultural experiences. San Pedro LEAP provides time and space for enrichment activities that spark students’ curiosity and motivates their love towards learning. As part of our enrichment activities we offer music, ballet, soccer, chess, and knitting, to name a few. This is the first school year that San Pedro has adopted a non-homework policy school wide and that has permitted us to have more time to learn while having fun!

Short Elementary LEAP’s biggest accomplishment is having the community involved with our school and having the students learn and expanding their horizons with the volunteers from the First Presbyterian Church of San Rafael. They are learning not only how to cook healthier alternatives to dishes they see made at home but also learning fun and hands-on art projects that range from doing symmetrical fruit paintings to dot art self-portraits. Lastly the kid's' involvement in the garden and how hands-on they like to be in getting the planters ready for the spring planting session.

We celebrate together and enjoy our beautiful community of learners!
