"Dia de los Muertos—the Day of the Dead—is a holiday celebrated on November 1 that honors the dead with festivals and lively celebrations.  Assured that the dead would be insulted by mourning or sadness, Dia de los Muertos celebrates the lives of the deceased with food, drink, parties, and activities the dead enjoyed in life. Dia de los Muertos recognizes death as a natural part of the human experience, a continuum with birth, childhood, and growing up to become a contributing member of the community. On Dia de los Muertos, the dead are also a part of the community, awakened from their eternal sleep to share celebrations with their loved ones."

"Each year Urban Promise Academy’s Afterschool program staff and students honor Dia de los Muertos by hosting an all school celebration filled with live student art, videos, original poetry written and presented by students, dance performances, and student led drumming sessions. Our afterschool students MC, decorate, and facilitate the entire assembly from start to finish, and we are so proud of their dedication and efforts.  Additionally, we had the privilege to have traditional Aztec dancing and sage blessings. open up our assembly.  What a beautiful way to remember our ancestors and celebrate our vibrant community."
